Fishing in Abaco

World-renowned bone fishing flats and offshore fishing await in the crystal-clear waters of Abaco.

Types of Fishing

Bone Fishing

Year-round, peak March-June

The flats around Casuarina Point and Cherokee Sound offer exceptional bone fishing. These shallow, crystal-clear waters are home to trophy bonefish that will test your skills and equipment. Best times are early morning and late afternoon on incoming tides when the fish move onto the flats to feed.

Abaco is world-renowned for its bone fishing flats - this is why anglers come from around the globe.
We can recommend guides for your trip. They know the tides, the fish behavior, and can dramatically improve your success rate.
Fishing Regulations

A flats fishing license is required for bonefishing.

  • Flats fishing license required for bonefish, tarpon, permit, and cobia
  • If 2+ anglers fish from a boat on the flats, a certified Bahamian guide is required
  • Solo anglers (DIY) do not need a guide but still need a license

Licenses: Day ($15), Weekly ($20), Monthly ($30), Annual ($60). Guides can arrange licenses for you, or apply at fisheries@bahamas.gov.bs

Deep Sea Fishing

April-August for marlin

Hire a guide from our neighborhood to fish off shore. The waters off Casuarina are prime deep-sea fishing waters! Head offshore into the deep blue Atlantic for marlin, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and tuna. The drop-off is just a few miles from shore, making Abaco perfect for half-day and full-day charters.

The Bahamas Billfish Championship regularly includes Abaco stops for good reason.
Half-day trips are perfect for beginners. Full-day trips target the bigger pelagic species further offshore.

Reef & Bottom Fishing

Year-round

Grouper, snapper, hogfish, and more await on the nearby reefs and wrecks. This is excellent fishing for families and beginners - you're almost guaranteed to catch something delicious. Most guides can clean your catch for a fresh seafood dinner back at the house.

Great for families - kids love the action and you'll bring home dinner!
Ask your guide to fillet your catch. Local restaurants will often cook your fresh-caught fish for a small fee.

Spear Fishing

Year-round

For the adventurous, spearfishing in Abaco offers an exciting challenge. Free diving in crystal clear water among the reefs requires skill and patience, but rewards you with the freshest possible catch. Lobster (in season) and hogfish are prized targets.

The ultimate sustainable fishing - take only what you'll eat and experience the reef up close.
Lobster season runs August through March. Spearfishing requires snorkeling or freediving skills - bring a buddy for safety.
